Weddings in Washington

March 17, 2023

Spring is in the air! And so is LOVE! It is the busy wedding season here in Washington, and what could be more magical than getting married by the riverfront, or at a beautiful historic building? Washington has many options when choosing a venue for your nuptials.

One such option is the Washington Civic Center. Originally a train depot, the Civic Center was built in 1906 and still features the original brick walls, hardwood floors, and exposed beams. Charlotte Stubbs, Venue & Event Manager for the Civic Center, says the location is great because everything downtown is within walking distance. "It’s great for pictures before and after the wedding. As well as different options for your rehearsal dinner. The river makes an absolutely stunning backdrop.

Other venues include Festival Park, the Elmwood Bed & Breakfast, The Bank Bistro, the Mitspah Manor & Chapel, and The Mulberry House. "They have a rooftop that overlooks the waterfront, so you can get married on the rooftop. I have even heard of weddings that finished their night off on the roof with fireworks."

The Civic Center is a great choice because it is enclosed and protected from the weather. Stubbs says it is also a wonderful option because there is no specific caterer or decorator that must be used. "It really is like a blank palate. That being said, the building itself has loads of character and great bones."

Stubbs says she is currently booking for 2024.2023 is almost fully booked on weekends. "We do have some availability between Christmas and New Year’s. It is a gorgeous historic venue. We can accommodate around 250 people in for a wedding. On either side of us, there are two churches as well. Both accept couples from outside their congregation, as long as they are vetted with the pastor. They are both lovely churches in which to get married."

The Civic Center also offers different rentals for the venue, such as cocktail tables, white folding chairs, wedding archway, tablecloths, tulle drape for the ceiling, and a hanging floral display. "We also have our ‘something borrowed’ room. That’s where we keep any décor that other brides and decorators have donated to the Civic Center so that others may use it. "Those items do not need to be rented, just ‘borrowed.’

Stubbs says that if you have recently gotten engaged, the first thing to do is to pick your venue and lock it in. "Obviously the wedding industry in this area is booming, so if you want the date of your choice, go ahead and book your venue. Then book all of your vendors from there. There is definitely an option for everyone in Washington and Beaufort County, depending on what you are looking for."
