Washington, NC is rich in African-American history, and its Juneteenth observance is reflective of that history. Juneteenth is the celebration of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. It honors the date of June 19, 1865 when the last group of (250,000) enslaved Americans was freed by executive decree in Galveston, Texas. The day has come to be known as ‘Juneteenth.’
Many towns have Juneteenth activities, but Washington goes all out with a two-day celebration. Washington will hold its fourth annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival on June 21st and 22nd.
This year’s Juneteenth Freedom Festival’s Grand Marshall is Marcia Strawder. Ms. Strawder says it is an honor to serve in that capacity. "Juneteenth is a very special historical day. It signifies freedom, and that the truth will always come to light."
The occasion kicks off Saturday afternoon at 3pm downtown with a ‘Freedom to Prosperity’ parade. Juneteenth committee member Henry Capognia says this year’s event is the largest one in Washington to date. "It’s really a celebration of the community. We want everyone to come out and learn the history as well as enjoy the festivities planned."
There are an abundance of festivities this year. Amusement rides, a bounce house, vendors, games, prizes and food trucks promise something for everyone.
There will be live entertainment both days including the high energy Chocolate Chip & Company band, gospel groups, and dance exhibitions, featuring the Nulook Steppaz.
A variety of food trucks will be on hand as well.
The parade will travel from Stewart Parkway to Beebe Memorial Park, where the opening ceremonies will take place, and Washington’s Mayor Sadler will crown Juneteenth’s Little Miss.
Capognia says the Juneteenth Freedom Festiva is really for everyone. It is a celebration of community itself.
Whether you are interested in history, great live entertainment, art, awesome food, or family activities, Washington’s Juneteenth Celebration has something for everyone.
