(Local Take by Wonder Guides: A quick Q&A with a local to help you learn more about interesting places and things to do so you’re more prepared when you venture out.)

LOCAL: TYLER WATTS

If your idea of "Being Outdoors" is enjoying nature through the panoramic window of your temperature-controlled glamping dome, then we have the place for you. Welcome to Broad River Campground. We sat down with Tyler Watts, one of the owners of Broad River Campground, to get a local take on camping cabins, glamping domes, and what it means to have a sleepover with Mother Nature..

TAKE: BROAD RIVER CAMPGROUND

Q: Did you always want to own a campground?

A: I grew up camping and remember sitting by the campfire telling ghost stories. Being outdoors and hearing nature brings peace to a busy world. Looking for shooting stars is a must around here. We would go tent camping when I was a kid, so it holds true to my heart. It’s the truest form of camping and I want my children to experience it. Something about setting up camp and taking a piece of land and making it your home for a few nights is truly special. I guess the idea to own a place like this steamed from those experiences.

Q: What makes this campground unlike others?

A: The location is key. We want people who stay here to have an escape from reality. We are nestled between three thriving towns with plenty of things to do. However when you enter the park, you feel hours away from everything. The Broad River Campground and Broad River Greenway offer ample space to hike and explore without the crowds. We strategically built the park where no one feels crowded or on top of each other. At night, enjoy your own hot tub in privacy while you listen to nature and some tunes -because this version of Mother Nature comes with wifi.

Q: What advice would you give to a first-time camper?

A: This is not your father’s campground. It’s less primitive tents and more about comfort. We have three ways you can stay with us: Park in an RV space with full hook up. Rent out a family cabin that sleeps up to eight. Or, make your night an adventure in a fully furnished, temperature controlled, Glamping dome – complete with private deck and hot tube.

Q: What is your favorite place to stay on the grounds?
A: In my opinion, the Best Spot in the park is Dome 5 (Knotty & Nice) as it overlooks the mountains and golf cart trail. We have RV sites that face the mountains as well and we call them our "Movie Screen" spots as the view is ever-changing throughout the seasons.

Q: What outdoor activities can visitors do while they are staying?

A: I recommend that adults hike the Broad River Greenway. You can grab a seat at a Gardner Webb Football game or a drink at the local winery or brewery. I would also check out the local antique dealers if you enjoy shopping. If you’re camping with kids, take them to the river to kayak or tube. Uptown Shelby is also always hopping with outdoor concerts, lots of galleries and shops, craft breweries and local restaurants. Try the Shelby Cafe if you want a pancake to die for. There’s even a century old wooden carrousel.

Q: What are the top five must-have camping essentials?

A: Camera for breathtaking photos, hiking boots, a cooler for refreshments, a toothbrush for fresh breath, and most importantly…COFFEE!
