Find your own rhythm with a walk in the woods in Cleveland County. Whether you’re aiming for the tallest peaks in Crowders Mountain or prefer an easy stroll near downtown, there’s a trail waiting for you. So fill your day pack with water, snacks, and maybe a pair of binoculars because there are sights to see, rivers to cross, and western North Carolina wildflowers waiting to be identified.

Crowders Mountain State Park

Hikers who like to earn their views with a little grunting and sweat take to the trails at Crowders Mountain State Park. With 11 trails, you can choose your own adventure. Will it be the 6.2-mile Ridgeline Trail to the boulders or an easy just shy of a mile stroll along the Lake Trail? Hikers are drawn here for the views of wildflowers, mountain laurel and ridges that lead to Crowders Mountain and the Pinnacle overlook. For those going up elevation, pack a pair of binoculars to take in that 25-mile view of the surrounding counties.

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail

Strap on your hiking shoes for the multiple trails at Kings Mountain Gateway. Just a half-mile from downtown Kings Mountain, and less than 20 minutes from Uptown Shelby, this area has some of the best hiking and biking in the entire region. Choose from four different trails that cover over 8 miles. Each trail connects to the other and weaves throughout the forest and hills. Along the path you may pass the edge of an active quarry, a garden designed for Monarch butterflies, a bamboo forest, or a scenic overlook of Kings Mountain and Crowder’s Mountain. It’s time to gear up and head out. May the forest be with you.

Broad River Greenway

With 1500 acres and 20 miles of trails, the Broad River Greenway beckons hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Choose from one of the 13 trails which vary in length from .4-mile to 1.4-miles. The trails run adjacent to Sandy Run Creek and the Broad River, giving adventurers spectacular opportunities to spot nature and wildlife. There are opportunities to cool off in the river and fish its banks. So bring your outdoor gear and prepare to spend a full day high-fiving Mother Nature
