Lake Holt — A Beautiful Lake. A Beautiful Time.

August 5, 2020

The lake that goes by many names. Some call it Holt Lake or Butner Lake. The Town of Butner refers to it as Lake Holt. It’s formal name is actually R.D. Holt Reservoir. Regardless of what you call it (we’ll stick with Lake Holt), we can assure you the take-away will be the same. Your lasting impression of Lake Holt will be peaceful, serene, quiet, a wonderful escape.

The lake and park are managed under the watchful eye of Alicia Chamberlain. Chamberlain took over the management a few years ago with new rule: open year round, and a simple mission: "We want to create a place where people can come with their families and simply enjoy each other’s company and the outdoors," Says Chamberlain. She has certainly accomplished that mission and continues to create opportunities to enjoy and land.

Lake Holt was impounded in 1965 to supply water to the Department of Health and Human Services and other local governments. The lake is approximately 385 acres in size. While it does allow fishing boats, they don’t allow jet skis or any ski activity. So the water is smooth, calm, and boast a tremendous fishery, particularly for Bream, Shell cracker and Crappie. The Bass population is overcrowded so there is a 10 fish limit except only 2 maybe greater than 14 inches. So that means the 8 other have to be less than 14 (or you could keep 10 10 inchers). Needless to say, you’ll be busy while your line is in the water. Non-power boat rentals are available with kayaks, paddleboards, johnboats leading in popularity. Another benefit for those fishing – Due to its primary use as a water reservoir, there is no swimming permitted at the lake.

Outside the water there is a 10 acre recreation area that includes 13 picnic tables and one picnic shelter with 8 picnic tables available to the public. The town has also developed a playground at Lake Holt. It consists of two belt swings, one net swing and a play structure with two towers, a spider net, a fireman’s pole, and a slide. The playground is designed for children aged 5-12.

A hidden gem at the lake is the Lake Holt Grill and Marina where you pay to fish and launch a boat. The building, located just off the parking lot and adjacent to the lake, also serves as a tackle shop, booking stand for the picnic shelter, has bathrooms, and is becoming known for its restaurant. While its menu may be traditional with popular items like burgers dogs, wraps, cheese steaks, and more, the Lake Side Grill is best known for not only the quality of the food, but the hospitality of the people.

Overall, Chamberlain says the lake and park attract a cross section of guests. "we have walkers and hikers…those looking for exercise, we have families looking to get away and spend time together, serious fisherman, those that want to be on the water such as kayakers, and then foodies who are interested in a bite to eat in a beautiful setting." Something for everyone. And more is on the way. Bluegrass and other live music is on the agendas, as is the building of a beach fire pit.

All in all, as Chamberlain says, "Lake Holt is a place that takes your worries away." It provides a unique combination of "peace" and "energy" and is Uniquely Carolina.
