Top 5 Ways to Enjoy Social Distancing while Finding What You Love in Mecklenburg

July 20, 2020

  1. Unwind on the Water in Clarksville – Rent a Pontoon from Clarksville Marina or Clarksville Water Sports and plan a day of cruising around Kerr Lake! Call in your lunch order to Bobbin Cork or The Lamplighter Restaurant and pull up to the town dock by the bridge to have it delivered. Round out your evening by catching one of our famous Kerr Lake sunsets and then head to Cooper’s Landing for dinner (they have taken every measure to optimize your safety with distanced seating and reservation-only dining – so be sure to call first!)
  2. Travel Back in Time in Boydton – History buffs will delight in what they find in our quaint little town of Boydton. With locations marked on the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail, the Civil War Trail and National Historic Landmarks, there is much history to be uncovered here. In fact, you’ll find more than 50 historic landmarks within the area of one square mile. Stop in at the town office located at 461 Madison Street to pick up a guide to help you on your way, and call ahead to the historic Boyd Tavern (434-738-9800) to get a personal inside tour of this precious landmark that’s been standing in Boydton for over 200 years. Pick up lunch at Our Happy Place cafe or the legendary Rose’s Pizza and plan to have a hearty helping of some of the area’s best seafood at The Copper Kettle.
  3. Go Treasure Hunting in Chase City – Longing for a cultural experience? Travel a few blocks off Main Street through a canopy of tree-lined streets and find yourself immersed in treasures from around the globe. Established in 1929, MacCallum More Gardens offers 5 acres of winding stone paths leading you through a wide variety of plant species, a unique collection of European and Asian artifacts, Italianate sculptures and fountains. Entry is free and open to the public. Take a break for lunch just a couple miles away at Lois’ Kitchen and come back for an afternoon visit at the museum, which features 5 permanent exhibits and revolving art displays.
  4. Discover the Unexpected in South Hill – Pack the sunscreen and a blanket and then start your day at the Southern Virginia Makers Market to gather your picnic items from your choice of locally-sourced fresh produce, meats and even pre-packaged meals. Then head over to the sandy-banks of the Meherrin River at Whittle’s Mill Park. Here you’ll find a colonial era grist mill and a beautiful waterfall as the backdrop for your outdoor escape. Enjoy your picnic, go for a swim or even plan a kayak trip. The Meherrin is a designated Virginia Scenic River. Its dark waters remain unpolluted, and the river valley is secluded from development. It’s not unusual to spend the entire day floating the Meherrin without seeing another person or hearing a sound other than the river, the wind and the abundant wildlife of the Meherrin Forest. The Town of South Hill maintains a canoe and kayak ramp just upstream of the millpond dam. After your day of fun, cruise back in to town and head over to 313 Franklin Cocktails & Kitchen for 5 Star cuisine in a modernized school house setting. (Click to View this Road Trip in Google Maps)
  5. Paddle, Pie & Wine on Lake Gaston – Pack a blanket & a picnic basket! Start your day at Holly Grove Marina where you can grab a few snacks and rent a kayak or even a pontoon to hop on the calm, clear waters of Lake Gaston. After a day on the lake, head just a few miles away and only slightly off the beaten path to a local treasure- JB Jones Co. & Bakery. You’ll want to fill that basket here with home-baked goodies like ham rolls, fresh produce, cakes & pies (don’t forget the pie! We hear they’re the best in Southern Virginia) Then less than a mile away is your final destination – Rosemont Winery – where they invite you to bring your own picnic items and dine on their lovely patio or lush green lawn overlooking the vineyard. It is here on this 450 acre estate that you will find award-winning, premium handcrafted wines, all of which are 100% estate grown, produced and bottled.
