"Strawberries (and more!)" Who would have thought that would be a rallying cry? But here we are in the midst of a very difficult time, and also at the beginning of the North Carolina Strawberry season. The great news is these two points can intersect in Granville County as farms are cleared as "essential" because of the food supply they provide to households.
Two farms in Granville County taking the lead in delivering essential fruit and produce are Lyon Farms in Creedmoor and Christmas Place Strawberry Farm in Bullock.
"We’re doing everything we can to keep up supply" says Mark Lyon who runs Lyon Farms with his wife Rose. The farm currently supplies pre-made boxes of as cross section of vegetables for sale at the farm and at select community sites such as the Carrboro Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays and at the Wilton Pizzeria on Wednesday. At the farm "picking" will begin in a few weeks and offer "you pick" and "we pick."
Offering a wide array of product, a stop at Lyons Farms can garner onions, cabbage, asparagus, tomatoes, broccoli and more. "we fill a void," states Mark. "With grocery stores having difficulty in keeping stock, we help support customers and get the products that people want."
The farm is being creative in how it delivers products. They have pre-packed boxes that customers can purchase, and also have additional shelves of products for anyone looking to supplement their buy. Further, everything is outdoors which also provides a level of safety. They will also facilitate car deliver and "drop-off" in the parking lot for customers upon request.

The Christmas Place Strawberry Farm is a dedicated strawberry farm with 3 acres of crops. The farm offers multiple ways to purchase their amazing strawberries. They offer "pre-pack" boxes that can be purchased at sites in Oxford and Henderson. They offer on-line purchase which can be pre-paid with a debit or credit card and then picked up at their sale sites. They also will deliver to a business if there are multiple orders. And of course, they have "you pick" and "we-pick" at their farm. "We are just doing what we have to do." Says Tammy Williamson owner of Christmas Place. People are calling for our strawberries, so we want to be able to deliver.
They are also taking safe steps along the way. The playground at the farm is closed until further notice and the staff is wearing gloves and masks as needed. They are also delivering product to your car if requested. Additionally, the large fields are ideal for safe, distancing while picking as the rows are over 300 feet long. The farm will monitor the crowd and plan to space families out accordingly. "We have such a large field, we will manage it so you have your own space and area," says Tammy. She is reporting a "bumper crop!" So keep a distance, but get your fresh strawberries at The Christmas Place Strawberry Farm.
