Located in the heart of downtown South Hill is the stately, three-story Colonial Theatre. It’s the kind of building you’re drawn to simply by its presence. And with good reason. Entertainers from near and far routinely travel here to grace the storied stage, bringing with them all the excitement and allure of a big-city entourage. Over the years, the Colonial has showcased talented performances from Joan Crawford, Clara Bow, Ronald Coleman, Tex Ritter, Gene Autry and Champ, Roy Rogers and Trigger, Minnie Pearl, and many more. More recently, the Colonial brings beloved Broadway shows like Cats, Diary of Anne Frank and many others.
At night, the colored lights from all three floors shine like a beacon. Originally built in 1925, the Colonial features a grand lobby and theatre auditorium, and at one time included a street front post office as well as a social hall on the third floor. Most of the shows were made possible with sponsorship and support of the Atlantic and Danville Railroad.
After a lengthy restoration process beginning in 2001, the 400-seat theatre is now listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. It showcases regional theatre, touring musical acts and entertainment on a seasonal schedule. The Colonial remains one of the few remaining vaudeville theatres of its era still in operation.
